Choose compatible accessories for Shopify complementary products.
“Often bought together” and “works with this computer” are different claims. Use compatibility evidence to choose the accessories, then Shopify to display products you sell.
Two jobs, two systems
Shopify Search & Discovery lets you select complementary products for a product page. Its related-product suggestions are not a hardware compatibility check.
SpecJoin supplies computer/accessory findings, required cables and screen or charging limits. Your store keeps the product records, stock and checkout. There is no SpecJoin Shopify app or automatic sync to install.
Example: a replacement ThinkPad charger
Lenovo ThinkPad X250 + charger part 0A36258
Lenovo lists this charger for the laptop. Charging speed and performance under heavy use have not been assessed.
- Use the genuine part number shown and the mains connection for your country. Other spare parts and generic chargers need their own compatibility check.
Find the Shopify product you sell for this exact charger. Its SKU can be anything; it must map to the verified manufacturer part. A third-party look-alike or a different regional bundle is not automatically the same item.
This result is supported. Check its requirements before adding the recommendation, and keep the relevant charging note beside the accessory.
The simplest route: select the products yourself
- Check the laptop and the accessories you stock using the API or downloaded relationships.
- In Shopify Search & Discovery, open Product recommendations, choose the laptop listing and select the verified accessories as Complementary products.
- Use a theme with a complementary-products block. Check that the selected accessories are active, available on the Online Store and in stock.
That creates the product links, not the compatibility explanation. If the theme only shows a product card, add the required note to the product template or a custom accessory section. Do not hide a cable, software or charging requirement behind a bare “compatible” label.
For a larger catalogue
Your developer can request the charger, monitor or dock list for each computer and map returned IDs to your Shopify products. Retain the entire compatibility item, not only its ID. Unknown or unsupported combinations should not enter the recommendation list.
Dock screen support and laptop charging need separate notes. A dock that runs a screen through USB-A may still require the laptop’s own charger.
Variant-dependent requirements need variant-aware display. Product-level recommendations alone cannot distinguish every configuration or the contents of a refurbished bundle.
