Does your laptop’s USB-C port support a monitor?

USB-C describes the connector; video support depends on the port.

Check the exact port

Look in the laptop’s specifications for DisplayPort over USB-C, DisplayPort Alt Mode or a documented Thunderbolt display connection. A DisplayPort or Thunderbolt mark beside the port can help, but check the model’s documentation if the marking is missing or unclear.

A port that charges the laptop is not necessarily a video output. A laptop can also have several USB-C ports with different capabilities.

Match the cable to the monitor input

Choose a cable or adapter for the monitor’s input, such as USB-C from the laptop to DisplayPort on the monitor. It must support that direction and your resolution and refresh rate.

A USB-C charging cable or a cable described only as “USB 3” does not establish video support. HDMI-to-USB-C and USB-C-to-HDMI adapters are not automatically interchangeable.

If the port does not support video

A DisplayLink dock or adapter sends graphics over USB. It requires compatible DisplayLink hardware and software; software alone cannot add video to an ordinary USB adapter.
